Grass Seed Calculator
Enter your lawn size and the seeding rate from your seed bag to see how much seed to buy.
These are estimates. Real jobs vary with surface, product and waste, so round up and check your product's label before you buy.
How much grass seed do I need for my lawn?
Measure the lawn's area in square feet, divide by 1,000, and multiply by the seeding rate on your seed bag. The rate varies a lot by grass type because seed sizes differ, so always use the number printed on your bag. This table uses 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet as an example.
| Lawn area | Seed at 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft | 5-lb bags |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | 5.0 lb | 1 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 12.5 lb | 3 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 25.0 lb | 5 |
| 10,000 sq ft | 50.0 lb | 10 |
How the grass seed calculator works
Pounds of seed equal area ÷ 1,000 × rate. We then divide by your bag size and round up. For irregular lawns, measure each section separately and add the areas, then use the total area box. Overseeding an existing lawn often uses about half the new-lawn rate, but follow the bag.
Seeding tips
Cool-season grasses such as fescue, bluegrass and ryegrass are usually seeded in early fall, and warm-season grasses such as Bermuda in late spring or early summer. Loosen the soil, spread the seed evenly and keep the top layer of soil moist until the grass is established.
